• TheNeighbourGood.ca helping connect shoppers with local products, services

Many small businesses have been severely impacted by COVID-19 mandated closures, and many of them require support and and guidance in creating their online presence.

That’s why the St. John’s Board of Trade, Downtown St. John’s, Mount Pearl Paradise Chamber of Commerce, Conception Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and PCSP Chamber of Commerce partnered with their townships to launch TheNeighbourGood.ca — supported by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“We thought ‘What can we do to help small businesses right now?’ and the answer was clear we had to make sure people knew about the products and services they could still get — safely — right here in our communities,” says Rhonda Tulk-Lane, Acting CEO of the St. John’s Board of Trade.

TheNeighbourGood.ca has the convenience of Amazon, but it’s powered by neighbourhood businesses. Shoppers don’t have to remember the names of individual local businesses or have an idea of what they stock. They can simply search for what they need and can immediately make a purchase through the business’s e-commerce shop or arrange for a safe transaction — like curbside pick-up or contactless delivery.

“If you need soap or a duvet or a new pair of pants, there’s a local store that has what you need — you just might not realize it yet,” says Tulk-Lane.

She says it’s been amazing how quickly some local businesses jumped on setting up their own e-commerce site after a mandated COVID-19 closure. She reached out to NEXT Clothing Company about making a purchase because they didn’t have an online shop — but 24 hours later, they did!

Tulk-Lane says participating businesses are “really excited” about NeighbourGood helping to promote their products and services. Many have struggled with customers either not knowing they were still open, or not realizing how many products they had available for purchase.

“We’re trying to create the awareness that these products and services are available right here at home, so everyone can shop right here and support their neighbourhood businesses.”

The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce is taking proactive steps to promote reconciliation and respect for Indigenous rights within the corporate sector. In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 92, the Chamber urges its members to embrace the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a guiding framework. This entails a commitment to meaningful consultation, fostering respectful relationships, and obtaining the free, prior, and informed consent of Indigenous peoples before embarking on economic projects. Moreover, the Chamber advocates for equitable access to employment, training, and educational opportunities for Indigenous communities, ensuring they reap sustainable benefits from economic development initiatives.

Recognizing the importance of education, the Chamber encourages businesses to provide comprehensive training for management and staff on the history of Indigenous peoples, including the legacy of residential schools, Indigenous rights, and Aboriginal-Crown relations. Emphasizing intercultural competency, conflict resolution, and anti-racism, these efforts aim to foster a more inclusive and harmonious corporate environment rooted in mutual understanding and respect.
