Name: Halifax- Business After Hours: Hotchkiss Home Furnishings
    Date: October 18, 2018
    Time: 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM ADT
    Event Description:
As an 18 year old, Chris Hotchkiss began delivering mattresses while attending Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. Before too long he was promoted to selling furniture and his passion for the home furnishing industry was born. In 2010, with the help of his family and friends, Chris opened the very first Hotchkiss Home Furnishings store on Prospect Street in Fredericton. Great brands like Ashley Furniture, Sealy Mattresses, Palliser, Whirlpool, Maytag and Frigidaire filled his showroom. Since then Chris’ life and business have grown considerably. He and his wife Elise added two beautiful children, Max and Evie and the business has added two new stores, Grand Falls, NB and Dartmouth, NS. Chris was also selected to participate in the prestigious “Wallace McCain Institute” an organization helping grow Atlantic Canada’s most promising entrepreneurs. Throughout the growth and changes, Chris has stayed very consistent with what he wants the Hotchkiss brand to represent. “We are a friendly, family business,” he says. “It’s wonderful to see people get excited when making important furnishing decisions for their home. Our goal is to offer customers great products, great value and a customer service experience that is second to none.” Chris and his team would like you to experience the store for yourself. “I am confident when you drop by you will be very satisfied with the Hotchkiss experience. We look forward to meeting you and your family.”

  • Business Truth & Reconciliation Business Truth & Reconciliation

The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce is taking proactive steps to promote reconciliation and respect for Indigenous rights within the corporate sector. In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 92, the Chamber urges its members to embrace the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a guiding framework. This entails a commitment to meaningful consultation, fostering respectful relationships, and obtaining the free, prior, and informed consent of Indigenous peoples before embarking on economic projects. Moreover, the Chamber advocates for equitable access to employment, training, and educational opportunities for Indigenous communities, ensuring they reap sustainable benefits from economic development initiatives.

Recognizing the importance of education, the Chamber encourages businesses to provide comprehensive training for management and staff on the history of Indigenous peoples, including the legacy of residential schools, Indigenous rights, and Aboriginal-Crown relations. Emphasizing intercultural competency, conflict resolution, and anti-racism, these efforts aim to foster a more inclusive and harmonious corporate environment rooted in mutual understanding and respect.
