    Halifax chamber calling for more in-office workers to help ‘stimulate’ downtown

    The Halifax Chamber of Commerce is calling on the city to adopt a hybrid work model requiring municipal employees to be in the office three to four days a week. As Megan King reports, the recommendation looks to help stimulate the downtown area – something local business owners are in favour of.

    Halifax Eyeing Commercial Tax Reforms To Help Struggling Businesses

    Leading up to Halifax’s 2021-22 municipal budget, there was much debate about commercial tax rates in the city. A staff report earlier in the year suggested that the average residential and commercial tax bills increase by 1.9 percent. For businesses, this would increase the yearly property tax expenses by more than $800, on average.

    Halifax Businesses Feeling The Frustration With Latest Lockdown

    Business leaders across the HRM are understandably frustrated after the province, just yesterday, announced another lockdown, due to a surge in Covid-19 cases. The severity of the restrictions announced yesterday took Sullivan by surprise.

    The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce takes proactive steps to promote reconciliation and respect for Indigenous rights within the corporate sector. In response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 92, the Chamber urges its members to embrace the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a guiding framework.

     

    Recognizing the importance of education, the Chamber encourages businesses to provide comprehensive training for management and staff on the history of Indigenous peoples, including the legacy of residential schools, Indigenous rights, and Aboriginal-Crown relations. Emphasizing intercultural competency, conflict resolution, and anti-racism, these efforts aim to foster a more inclusive and harmonious corporate environment rooted in mutual understanding and respect.
