The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce is welcoming Prime Minister Carney’s announcement today of the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), which dedicates $80 million to support businesses in Atlantic Canada. This announcement is a timely measure that recognizes the importance of optimizing supply chains, strengthen domestic trade, and expand markets.
The initiative targets businesses with at least 25% of sales to the U.S. and/or China or those directly impacted by tariffs, including sectors like steel and auto. Eligible entities such as incorporated companies, co-operatives, Indigenous-owned businesses, and non-profits—can receive non-repayable contributions, with costs retroactive up to 12 months before application, no earlier than March 21, 2025.
“Prime Minister Carney's announcement represents a vital step forward for Atlantic businesses impacted by trade uncertainties,” said Rhonda Tulk-Lane, CEO of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. “We are especially pleased to see the regional focus of this announcement, as it empowers companies to pursue new markets, streamline supply chains, and invest in productivity—directly addressing our region's priorities for long-term economic stability and expansion.”
As trade tensions persist, this support from the federal government will bolster regional economic resilience, providing Atlantic businesses with the tools to adapt and thrive in a changing global landscape. The Atlantic Chamber looks forward to collaborating with ACOA to ensure uptake among businesses across Atlantic Canada
